Given your deep expertise in HR project management and implementation what do you think the biggest challenges are for organizations these days?

Jacqueline Kuhn

I think the biggest challenge is getting out of their own heads and changing the way they work. Truly changing the way they work … not tweaking a process or not changing a workflow … we're really taking a look at what do we do … what don't we do … what shouldn't we be doing anymore … and look to your business leaders as to what do they need of you.

Jeanne Achille

So that's a big strategy piece isn't it?

Jacqueline Kuhn

It is.

Jeanne Achille

It sounds like that's what's been missing in successful implementation.

Jacqueline Kuhn

It has and you know the biggest misfortune is to take what you're doing today in technology that's 30 years old and try to apply it to something that is contemporary. It would be like taking a 30-year old car and trying to put GPS in it.

Jeanne Achille

Right right.

Jacqueline Kuhn

It's not gonna work.

Jeanne Achille

And with a whole new workforce as well because we've had so many new entrants into the workforce who have had consumer-grade experience in other applications, so they have entirely different expectations.

Jacqueline Kuhn

Their expectation is that what they do at work is integrated in their life. It's not work life balance. It is life. And to have to go to one tool to do this and another tool to do that is very foreign to them. They just want to one day buy something from Amazon and two hours later in that day look at their benefits all on their mobile device.

Jeanne Achille

Yeah, I think that's been a very interesting change. Do you think today's HR teams though are ready for digital transformation? And by that I mean the skill set of the HR teams today?

Jacqueline Kuhn

Most of them are ready. I think its fear and the fear isn't coming from the HR teams it's coming from operations. You know …  if I put a mobile device in someone's hand are they gonna be playing candy crush instead of working? Right?

Jacqueline Kuhn

But I think that the fear is coming from people who are afraid that all this digitization is going to lose their grasp on their employees …or by giving access to too much information employees are going to learn that maybe this isn't the best place to work. So it goes deeper than just the tools, it's all about the culture of the organization and how you want to be as an organization and that is the real struggle.

Jeanne Achille

I hear a big control message coming through from you that employers are just not entirely comfortable with that loss of control that they think they're going to experience.

Jacqueline Kuhn

They're not and those that are and are embracing new processes can best embrace the new technology. We, at HRchitect, often come in after someone who's purchased something saying it doesn't work for us and we'll take a look at what they've done and we've said well of course it doesn't work for you. You built it exactly the way you did your old system and you're not leveraging what you can possibly be doing. It's the change management that’s around that is I think probably the number one disservice in the industry today is most of the vendors on the market do not embed change management deep enough into their implementation methodology and organizations don't think to hire a third party to do that either.
